Yes, Men Can Breast Feed

June17

Did you know that men are physically able to breast feed their children (or anyones child, really)? Men and women both have all the right equipment for breast feeding, which are: nipples, milk ducts, mammary tissue and hormones (specifically oxytocin and prolactin). So if a man wants to breast feed his kid, he simply needs to have the child suck on his nipple. The nipple stimulation will trigger the hormones to be releases, and like magic, Daddy is lactating…

man breast feeding

Even weirder then the thought of men breast feeding their babies, is the total lack of studies on male lactation. It’s like there is a total cover up of the subject. Most of the information I have been able to find is “Yes, men can produce breast milk, but nothing else is known…” or “…no one knows if mens breast milk has the same nutritional value of womens…”, etc. So you’re telling me that we can grow human ears on the backs of lab rats, successfully transplant animal organs into humans, but we can’t find out the nutritional value of mens breast milk versus women? Come on…

Don’t get me wrong, I would be a little skeeved out if I saw a man breast feeding a child, but that’s just because we’ve all been taught that that is weird and unnatural. Nonetheless, I might have to try and milk Stefan with my breast pump…for the sake of science, of course!

    I love the dude’s expression. He’s like, “Yeah… I know… it’s off-putting, right?” LoL.

tharan: nipple milk, wth is nipple milk?

I’m a 24 yo guy and a couple of years ago actually got this to work! I also didn’t find alot of information, a few anecdotes of fathers with partners died in childbirth who took on the role (with the help of wetnurses – maximum male production is considerably less then a womans, prob due to the lesser bulk of tissue) and somewhere i found a physiological explanation that gave all the ~instruction i needed.

so, manual stimulation (vaseline and 10mins rubbing) 3 or 4 times a day for ~2 weeks will start production. that was as far as i got (and i did get a few drops!! odd to be proud of this /i know/, but i’m a curious person) but then i got a job and it would have been very, very wierd to take ‘manual stimulation’ breaks…

This is extremely interesting! I consider myself well read in the biological sciences and have never, ever heard of such a thing. We may not be confortable with it but you must admit its a BRILLIANT survival strategy. I imagine it may wreak a little havoc with the male endocrine system but if the child is starving I bet most fathers wouldn’t hesitate to try it if they knew it could work.

I don’t believe this works.. it’s a freaking HOAX, I tried using a breast pump, a ton of Fenugreek etc etc etc.. and nothing happened.
I have extremely female like breasts all thanks to low testosterone, obesity, Digoxin and elevated estrogen and prolactin levels due to other health problems.. I have everything going wrong for a man that would cause this to work, including gi-normous breasts (so freaking embarrassing) and I could not get this to work no matter what. $300 breast pumps of my wife’s burned out after me using it 3x a day for months. It is just NOT possible, anyone that says it is possible is lying!

So weird–this is exactly what I thought. I did research on male lactation and the structure of the male breast and I was surprised to find out that YES MEN CAN and have in the past, breast fed their babies. What was weird was the almost complete lack of information on the issue. What is up with that? Why have their been no studies. That almost upsets me.
